About

Sara Hodson
b. 1972. My mother (McCarthy) is Irish and my father was English and from the North of England. I was brought up in Devon, living for many years in the market town of Newton Abbot where my love of racing began and a few school days were lost.
I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember, it was my source of income during school holidays and I won several art prizes. My paternal grandfather Ron Hodson was an artist and lecturer, exhibiting widely in the North of England but it never occurred to me to become an artist. I went on a year long Art Foundation course at South Devon College but chose to study History at Plymouth University and completed a Masters Degree in Irish Studies at Bath College.
In 1996 I moved to West Cork in Ireland where my mother’s family originate and where we spent family holidays as children. I began teaching and accepting commissions and I had my first solo exhibition in Spillars Lane Gallery, Clonakilty in 1998 which was a great success. I worked for some years as a Graphic Designer, painting and exhibiting in my spare time before turning to painting full time.
I work from my studio at home and my subjects tend to be equestrian especially horse racing and horse fairs. I also paint other animals and watercolours of West Cork. I have exhibited in Ireland and the U.K. in solo and group exhibitions and have work in many private collections. I am a member of the West Cork Arts Centre, Skibbereen and a Full Member of the Society of Equestrian Artists in the U.K.. I regularly support the following charities through my work; The Emile Faurie Foundation www.emilefauriefoundation.org.uk, Injured Jockeys Fund www.injuredjockeys.co.uk and the Irish Injured Jockeys Fund www.irishinjuredjockeys.com
